glitchy metal drawing

Some drawing operations which were perfectly smooth in the old regime are very glitchy under
metal. The first case that I saw involves a pop-up magnifier that does a complex magnified re-drawing
of the display.

The display on the left is metal, right is the same code with the old "wooden" graphics.

I had claude mangle this to get it down to size, but you can see the glitches clearly.

I need to understand what's going on here exactly. You rely on many deep nuances of our rendering system which are no longer applicable under metal. We're already making fixes for transformers, scale etc. so it could be possible that a fix to one of those issues collided with a workaround you have in place (or will collide. Without a reproducible test case this doesn't help.
